Tree Fort

Tree Fort
A battlement of forest leaves
hides the fort where old oaks grow
arms out to hold the nails and treasures
of the soldiers down below
Climb up to look across the field
and play until night’s glow
this far outpost in a different land
hurry now we’ve got to go

down the ladder of old used boards
run along the well-worn row
past tall green oceans of grassy waves
that splash against our feet and knees
to beat the darkness we hardly breath
and race each other home
